How to Eat in Harrisburg

Restaurant Reviews for Everything you Could Possibly Want, all in Downtown Harrisburg, PA
By: Yours Truly

Despite having no decent coffee bar, Harrisburg does have a few standout dining establishments, some better known than others.

Best Pizza
Palumbo’s, 2nd Street, next to the Old Spot
Everything here is awesome, from their plain cheese to their specialty pizza. My personal faves include white holiday, German, BBQ chicken, and the grandma pizza.

Best Chicken Sandwich
Cafe Fresco, 2nd Street between Locust and Pine
Their grilled chicken sandwich is topped with mozzerella cheese and field greens with a balsamic vinegar dressing.  Only served at lunch.  Comes with a small caesar salad or chips.  Asian Fusion at dinner is also damn good.

Best Chicken Salad
Two Brothers Pizza, Strawberry Square
Perfectly seasoned chicken, fresh lettuce, peppers, and melty mozzerella.  God in salad form. Wicked crowded on the hour and half hour for lunch.

Best Burrito
Neato Burrito, 2nd Street between Locust and Pine (next to Cafe Fresco)
Massive burritos made to order the way you like ‘em. I highly recommend the Cowboy Crunch.  This could be your only meal of the day, it is that filling.  Amazing, off-beat staff and atmosphere.

Best Mexican (upscale)
El Sol, Third Street near Market
Really good sit-down Mexican food. Authentic. Try the limeade and the quesadillas.

Best Cheap Mexican
Taco Factory, Strawberry Square
Very resonable and tasty taco combos.  Flirty male staff.

Best Sushi and Tempura
Miyako, Corner of Second and Pine Streets
Rock ‘n Roll is the bomb, so is the tempura chicken if you aren’t into sushi. Twin sister of the 29th Street location.

Best Subs
Sandwich Man, Corner of 2nd and Locust Streets
Hands down best subs anywhere. Made to order. Anything you could possibly want.  Friendly counter people. Sells beer at eleven am.

Best Burgers
Jackson House, N. 6th Street near Herr.
Not exactly downtown, but a quick drive. Awesome burgers. Only open on weekdays for lunch. Call ahead. Best cheeseburger you will ever eat, and a bangin’ deli.

Longest Standing/Best Dinner
Stock’s on Second, Between Locust and Pine
Seasonal menu.  Everything is terrific. A little pricey but worth it.

Best Cheesesteaks
Philadelphia Steaks and Hoagies, 4th Street between Walnut and Market
Popular for lunch.  Know what you want when you get to the front of the line.  Good beef and chicken cheesesteaks.

Best Bakery
Alvaro’s, Corner of Green and Peffer
Great canoli and italian bread.  Get there early in the day for hot bread.  Takeout spaghetti and meatballs as good as you’ll get outside of my grandmother’s kitchen.

Best Midtown Lunch
Nonna’s Delicioso!, Corner of Third and Reily
Deli sandwiches, antipasti, and salads.  Selection of cane sugar sodas and other bottled drinks.  Prompt, courteous service.  Al fresco seating on nice days.
